Old Head Par 4 4th

Today GPW brings you the 427 yard par 4 4th hole at Old Head.

The tee shot is played from an elevated tee and offers one of the most stunning views anywhere. The hole swings dramatically from right to left and plays out to the very edge of the cliffs. The combination of the cliffs, the ocean and the old lighthouse create a stunning environment in which to swing a golf club.

The hole is tilted, with the high ground on the right, running down to the cliffs on the left. The golfer can take a line well right of the lighthouse off the tee, and use the natural slopes of the fairway to bring the ball back.

Titanic, on her doomed maiden voyage, sailed right past the lighthouse at Old Head. This point on the Irish coast was the last piece of land the passengers on the ship saw before heading out to the open ocean.

The second shot is demanding. The green is squeezed between the cliffs on the left and a rock wall supporting the lighthouse on the right. The width of the green is only 19 paces, while 48 paces deep. A back left flag location is the most demanding, as show in the third picture.

Take note of the red stake line bordering the cliffs. There is a reason the stakes are red. Immediately beyond the stakes, the ground drops vertically to the Atlantic below.

The final picture is taken from the back right corner of the green, showing the stake line, perhaps only 10 paces from the flag location, and then, oblivion.
