Although Portrush is built on the coast, the first 3 holes begin inland and run directly out to the sea. The drive at the 2nd hole is extremely narrow, which is out of character for the course. Most of Portrush's holes are much wider and offer room off the tee.
The fairway snakes to the left, with the first half of the hole playing across open, rolling land. The fairway is framed by tall grass on either side. The second and third shots are played through modest dunes.

The hole actually becomes more narrow as you go. The green site is raised slightly and pinched by dunes and thick vegetation on the left and right. The green is rolling and has many natural contours, which can be found throughout the course.
