Doonbeg Par 4 5th

Today GPW brings you an interesting hole; the short par 4 5th hole at Doonbeg.

The 5th hole at Doonbeg is saddled between a series of dunes, playing back toward the ocean. The hole is very short, perhaps only 300 yards. The first picture shows the drive, which is uphill and entirely blind.

After the drive, you climb the steep incline to the top of the landing area and are afforded views of the green, with the ocean in the background. From this position, the player has perhaps 100 to 120 yards into the green. The green is open in the front, allowing the player to flight the ball low and bounce the ball into the green. The huge dunes on either side of the fairway make judging wind conditions difficult.

The fairway runs out, perhaps 80 yards from the green, as evidenced in the picture above. This feature forces players to lay up off the tee. Jefe and JC would absolutely hate this hole because of that fact. They would berate this hole unmercifully for hours and hours after the round, lambasting Greg Norman for ever having thought this thing up. GPW liked the hole, recording one of three birdies on the round.

The third picture is taken from the left side of the green. The beach and ocean are in full view, with the clubhouse dominating the horizon. The green is somewhat crowned, making it more difficult for the player to hold.
