Welcome to Erin Hills, host to the 2017 U.S. Open. The USGA has forever been infatuated with the Scottish inspired Erin Hills, even before it was built. It's as if the USGA and the county of Scotland got together and produced an illegitimate love child, which they named Erin Hills. This Wisconsin layout has the brutal difficulty that the USGA demands, mixed with the fescue grasses, high winds and crazy contours of links golf.
The 16th isn't exactly easy. The problems begin with the green. It is very narrow for a hole of this length. A hill and bunker on the left obscure the entire left portion of the green, making the putting surface seem even smaller. Menacing bunkers pinch the right side, front and back. The only miss you've got off the tee is short.
The second picture shows the green from the front edge. The back third of the green is bisected by a severe ridge. A flag found here, as shown in the picture, is without question the most difficult pin to get at.
The final picture is taken from right of the green. This picture demonstrates just how narrow the green is, from front to back. This hole is dangerous and a big number is always a possibility. A three here is a great score.
