Lahinch Par 3 5th

Today GPW brings you a world famous hole from Lahinch's Old Course, the par 3 5th, also known as The Dell hole.

From the tee, the Dell is entirely blind. All the player can see are dunes, and a white direction rock, which provides the line for the hole location. The hole plays back toward the sea and usually directly into the wind.

The picture is taken from the left hand side of the green. The tee box is behind the dune shown in the right hand side of the photo. Essentially, the green is sandwiched between two massive dunes. The green is extremely shallow, 18 paces at it widest point and only 12 paces at its most narrow.

The Dell is a very unique golf hole and likely would not be built today. Indeed, Erin Hills had a Dell Hole, done with remarkable accuracy in relation to the original. Erin Hills eliminated their Dell in the face of criticism and in an effort to make the course more playable.
